The direct medical costs of
diabetes nationally are estimated to be at least $92 billion per year, $24.6 billion of which are
estimated to be for chronic diabetes-related complications.
Hospitalizations comprise about 59
percent of all direct medical costs for diabetes (American Diabetes Association, Direct and
Indirect Costs of Diabetes in the United States, Economic Costs of Diabetes in the U.S. in
2002 Diabetes Care 26: 917-932).
The Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCP) airs numerous television and radio
public service announcements stressing the importance of diabetes management, e.g.,
"Control your diabetes--For life."

As of November 2004, the IBIS diabetes information is based on four diabetes indicators
developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Prevention Quality Indicators
(AHRQ PQIs).
For diabetes, an ACS condition refers to uncontrolled diabetes (type 1 and type
2), diabetes short-term and long-term complications, and amputations of lower extremities due
to diabetes among adults aged 18 years and older.
