IBIS-PH Complete Indicator Profile - Lung Cancer Deaths Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in Utah and the U.S. It is estimated that lung cancer will be responsible for nearly 29% of all cancer deaths (approximately 160,390 U.S. deaths) in 2007. Since nearly 90% of lung cancer deaths are attributed to smoking, public health efforts to reduce lung cancer focus on tobacco prevention and control.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in Utah and the U.S. In 2009 approximately 159,390 U.S. deaths will be due to lung cancer. For example, in 2006 (the most recent national data available from SEER), the U.S. lung cancer mortality rate was 53.0 per 100,000 population whereas the Utah lung cancer mortality rate was 23.6 per 100,000 population. Since nearly 90% of lung cancer deaths are attributed to smoking, public health programs to reduce lung cancer focus on tobacco prevention and control.

A statistically significant increase in site-specific cancer was found only for lung cancer during only one time period (1993-1997). Inhalational exposure to uranium ore has been associated with lung cancer; however, there is some evidence that the association is due to exposure to radon (a product of uranium and radium radioactive decay) rather than uranium itself. Radon exposure indoors has been associated with lung cancer (ATSDR, 1990b).

Sort By Description Description: Since Wasatch Energy Systems (WES) began operations in 1988, a group of residents have been concerned over a perceived increase in the occurrence of brain cancer in the neighboring community. WES operates a waste to energy municipal combustor. The facility burns solid waste from Davis County and the surrounding areas. In 1992, Davis County assumed control and renamed the facility the Davis County Solid Waste Management and Energy Systems Special Service District. In 1997, the Davis County again renamed the facility WES and is currently operating under that title.

This investigation found significant increase of brain cancer during multiple years and lung cancer during one year from 1973 – 2003. Although cigarette smoking accounts for the majority of lung cancer cases, other factors have also been implicated in the etiology of lung cancer, such as occupational exposure to asbestos (UCR 2000 and Shottenfeld and Fraumeni 1996). The EPA estimates that the proportion of lung cancers due to air contaminants is about 1% of all lung cancer deaths per year in the U.S. population with a small proportion due to occupational exposures (EPA 1990).

Sort By Description Description: Utah Health Status by Race and Ethnicity portrays important "health disparities" by race and ethnicity. Disparities exist when the health status on a given measure in one or more racial/ethnic populations is different from that found statewide. It is a national goal of the U.S. Public Health Service to eliminate health disparities, including those by race and ethnicity. The authors believe that this report will serve as a guide for Utah Department of Health (UDOH) programs and others with an interest in reducing health disparities, so that they may make evidence-based decisions on their priorities and future activities aimed at improving health status in Utah populations.

Utah consistently achieves the lowest rates of smoking, incidence of lung cancer, and mortality from lung cancer in the United States (Figure 1). In Utah, there is a positive correlation between incidence rates for lung cancer and smoking rates by Utah Health District: lower smoking rates correspond to a lower incidence of lung cancer (Figure 4, R2 = 0.835). 4 Exposure to SHS is known to cause lung cancer in non-smokers, and is also linked to an increased risk for heart disease. 5 It is estimated that the risk of lung cancer is 30% higher in an adult who lives with a smoker than that of an adult who does not live with a smoker.
